Sodium anisate (sodium 4-methoxybenzoate) is the sodium salt of p-anisic acid — a white to pale yellow powder at room temperature, somewhat hygroscopic, with good water solubility (about 22% at 25 °C) and stable chemistry. It is mainly used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care, and is also an important pharmaceutical intermediate and fragrance synthesis raw material.
