tert-Butylhydrazine Hydrochloride · CAS 7400-27-3
tert-Butylhydrazine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride of a monoalkyl hydrazine in which one hydrogen of hydrazine is replaced by a tert-butyl group. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature, readily soluble in water, with the typical reducibility and basicity of hydrazine compounds.
The hydrazino group (-NHNH2) is strongly reducing and basic, with lone pairs on both nitrogen atoms, enabling diverse reactions: condensation with aldehydes/ketones to hydrazones; reaction with acyl chlorides to acyl hydrazides; reaction with nitrous acid to azides. The bulky, electron-donating tert-butyl group modulates the reactivity and selectivity of the hydrazino group.
