o-Tolunitrile · CAS 529-19-1
2-Methylbenzonitrile (o-tolunitrile) is a colorless liquid — an important aromatic nitrile intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Boiling point 205 °C; insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether; purity above 99%.
The nitrile can be hydrolyzed (carboxylic acid), alcoholyzed (ester), reduced (benzylamine), added with Grignard/organolithium reagents (ketones), added with H2S (thioamide), or converted via the Ritter reaction to introduce an amide group; the ortho methyl can be oxidized to a carboxyl, giving phthalic-acid-type derivatives.
